residential and commercial compost collection
For a small monthly fee, you can participate in Urban Roots' effort to capture organic waste streams in Grand Rapids and return them to food production.
At the same time, you will:
Create meaningful jobs & circular local economies in GR
Decrease your personal contribution to the waste stream
Increase soil fertility and close a gap in the food cycle
Play a direct role in our mission to distribute thousands of pounds of organic, nutrient dense produce into a food insecure neighborhood
Want to buy compost? We sell our finished compost in the Community Market. To check out market hours, click here.
**Starting May 1st, 2019**
We will be expanding to garfield park and alger Heights neighborhoods!
You can sign up now for service that will start the first week of May. Fill out this form if you live in the Garfield Park or Alger neighborhoods. Use the code COMPOSTHAPPENS19 to get your first month on us!

Residential site? here's how it works:
Make sure you live in the service area
Receive your collection bucket - everything you need to know to participate in the program will be inside the first bucket
Collect! Fill up your bucket with compostable household wastes that would otherwise go to a landfill!
Once a week on your assigned weekday an Urban Roots peddler will collect your compost and wipe out your bucket for you to reuse.
Within 7 days of signing up, a bucket will be dropped off at your residence and you can start collecting! All the information you need, including your assigned pick up day and a magnet with the Do’s and Don’ts, will be in the first bucket.
Click here to learn what compostables we accept (YOUR Compost Magnet).
Any questions? Please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you!
