Supperclub is an intentional and communal dining experience, heavily featuring food grown on the community farm! Chef Jenna of Amore Trattoria Italiana will be crafting a 4-course meal for you to enjoy, with locally made beer from Speciation Artisan Ales and wine.

We are back again with our first Supperclub of the 2019 season!

Supperclub is an evening of celebrating all things local: food, drink, and music.

For this event, we'll be partnering with head chef of Grove, Jeremy Paquin. The multi-course meal will be paired with local beer and wine, and live music by Amy Love & The Stoney Mountain Men!

This communal and intentional dining experience will be held outdoors at the beautiful Urban Roots Community Farm, Market, and Education center located at 1316 Madison Ave SE.

Fermented foods not only bring a delicious and unique twist to your kitchen, but they are also incredibly beneficial for your gut health!

In this class, we will empower our attendees with the knowledge they need to use ancient techniques to preserve foods that can spice up any dish. Kimchi, sauerkraut, and fermented pineapple are just the beginning!

Critter Barn Family Night!

Join us for our first family event of the year! We will be teaming up with Critter Barn's Farm-on-the-Go to bring live animals to Urban Roots Community Farm for this free event.

Who will be there: various kinds of goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens and chicks, and more!

Our strawberry patch will be bursting, and you can pick your own pint or quart to take home! We will be selling pints for $2 and quarts for $3 (cash, credit/debit, SNAP/EBT all accepted).

There will also be crafts and games to keep the whole family occupied.

Drop in any time to join the fun! We can't wait to celebrate the start of summer with all of you.

Plant Sale

This year, Urban Roots and Well House are joining plant sale forces to supply Grand Rapids growers with all the plants, seeds, and other materials they need to have a thriving garden! All proceeds from the plant sale will go towards supporting the Well House & Urban Roots apprenticeship program where members of the Well House community will receive employment and job skills training on the Urban Roots Community Farm.

Plants that will be available: tomatoes (10 varieties), peppers (8 varieties), eggplant, parsley, okra, swiss chard, stevia, bok choy, broccoli, kale, cabbage, collard greens, mustard greens, calendula, nasturtium, lettuce, turnip, spinach, cilantro, cucumber, zucchini, melon, winter squash, pumpkins, and more! We will also have a wide variety of seeds available.

Also for sale: raised beds, barrel planters, and soil amendments (compost and aged horse manure). Cash, credit/debit, checks, EBT/Bridge Card/SNAP all accepted!

Earth Day at Urban Roots!

Open volunteer hours ALL DAY! Free compost drop-off! A special YOUR Compost collection deal! All in honor of Earth Day.

We want to invite you to join in one way that we reducing the footprint for over 100 families, individuals, and businesses in Grand Rapids: COMPOST! Food and other compostable materials are the #1 least recycled items in the world - and we want to make it simple for you to be a part of our efforts to capture organic waste streams and return their nutrients to the soil!

Here are a few ways you can get involved on Earth Day:
1. Drop off your yard waste in our backyard and we will compost it for you! Instructions here
2. Get your hands dirty with ALL DAY open volunteer hours from 10am-6pm! Help us turn our compost piles, sift finished compost, and lend a hand on the farm. Learn a bit about our systems, and how we process thousands of pounds of compostable waste in an efficient way.

Our annual Spring Training will be covering everything from garden basics to tips to help the beginner or advanced gardener. Some of the topics we'll cover will be: garden design, when to plant your crops, how to care for plants, how to deter pests, when and how to harvest, cool weather vs warm weather crops, soil health, what tools to use and how to use them, and much much more.

If you've always wanted to start a garden but have been intimidated by the process, please come join us!

Join us for our first event of 2019, the Sowing the Seed fundraising luncheon!

At this annual event, we gather with our community, neighbors, and supporters to celebrate the successes of the previous year, and share a first look at the upcoming season.

Registration begins at 11:30, with formal program beginning at 12:00 sharp.

Lunch is a complimentary gathering, however, we hope that after hearing about our mission and vision to cultivate healthy communities in 2019, attendees are moved to donate an amount dependent on their ability.

Community Farm Fall Volunteer Gathering

The Community Farm has had a long, successful season! And now it's time to put our farm to bed for the winter. 

Join us for this volunteer work day to help us shut our farm down for the season. We'll need help putting away trellises, clearing up old plants, planting garlic, sowing cover crop, clearing out plants, re-establishing beds with stakes and string, spreading compost and laying mulch! Complete with hot apple cider and a bonfire. 

Take this opportunity to celebrate our community and explore the farm one last time in 2018! Come when you can, stay as long as you are able, and share a farm-fresh meal with us. There's a seat at our table for everyone. 

The community market will be open, so bring along your grocery bags for a late-season harvest haul! Discounts for our neighbors!
