The mission of Urban Roots is to CULTIVATE durable and resilient communities, families, and ecosystems through urban agriculture.

At Urban Roots, we are locally minded place makers who believe growing food is an invitation into being fully human. We believe that urban agriculture can simultaneously address food justice, unemployment, and urban community well being all while enriching and connecting our greater Grand Rapids Community.

Meet one of our YouthCorp members Wuendy! Wendy has a bright spirit, is eager to learn, and enjoys joking around with everyone.

Our YouthCorp members are in partnership with the GR Center for Community Transformation, the Urban Roots YouthCorps is a youth employment and education program which teaches urban sustainability, food justice and professional skills through the practice of urban agriculture.

YouthCorps members are building soft skills, learning day-to-day operations, and engaging with members of the community through growing, selling, eating, and cooking together. Students learn critical skills in team building, professionalism, community engagement, and social entrepreneurship.

Come out this week Thursday to our farm stand! If you can't make it this week, no worries because we will be out every Thursday until the end of November. Every week, the sale starts at 4:00pm and ends at 6:00pm. For the first week on June 2nd, the first 20 people who stop in and shop will receive a free Urban Roots sticker! Place it on your notebook, laptop, water bottle, or even your car!

If you can't make it then feel free to stop by anytime from 9am - 4pm (Monday-Friday) at our 1316 Madison SE location to purchase plants!

CSA shares are available now! Purchase our CSA shares and receive our locally grown vegetables every week! The sooner you can sign up the better, for planning purposes. To buy a share and support us at Urban Roots, find more information here.

Not only are we growing at our Community Farm but we also run a program called our Mobile Classroom which allows Urban Roots to take our tools, seeds and expertise all over the greater Grand Rapids area.

Thanks to Slow Food West Michigan, Urban Roots was selected as a Micro-grant recipient for 2016. This grant will be used to help us expand our use of heirloom seeds and seed saving at our location in Madison.  At our upcoming Plant Sale, Mobile Classroom, and Urban Farm, we are excited to grow culturally-appropriate and heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables.
